      David and his Mighty Men continue to fight against the Philistines, who are attempting to take one of David's largest encamped areas.  His group of Three, his strongest three men, go and scout out the enemy lines, and are shocked to find that the Philistines know practically all of their plans for war!  This puts David and his men behind the game.  They realize that the only way the enemy could have found out their plans would be that there was a traitor in the inner circles of David's council...


     Covenant of War is the second book of five in the Lion of War series by Cliff Graham. Like it's prequel, Day of War, it contains many battles and violence (although this one has much more).  I really enjoyed this book, as the characters are well developed and the friendship and love between them is very well played out. Deep words of council are mixed with the odd joke to keep the Men from falling into despair.       
       I really love the way the author has created David, a King, but is willing to live like his men. He eats when they eat, drinks when they drink, and walks with them on marches instead of taking his horse. This shows a man of true character, someone that his men will look up to immensely. However, he also has a dark side.  He is a thoughtless killer when he needs to be.  He has a long past of women and sin, but Yahweh has used him for good in the end.  His flaws show through, and the men respect him for being so open with them. 
       To me, David is an inspiration. When his army runs out water, they go weeks without water, and the men slowly begin to waste away, David getting the worst of it.  The Three go back to the well in Bethlehem to steal water for the King. When they get back, David refuses and says that he won't drink until his men can drink. If you were David's position, what would you do??
