In House Rules by Jodie Picoult, the main character is Jacob Hunt. Jacob Hunt has Aspergers which is a type of Autism. Characteristics for Aspergers is: hand flapping/stimming, the child does not make eye contact, the child does not know how to interact with their peers, they do not like being touched, the child takes statements literally, for example, if a person tells the child to "hold on a minute" they will literally start counting down from 60 holding on to something, also they are very intelligent, they will always tell the truth, the child does not like having their schedule messed up and they live to live by the rules.

Jacob Hunt is very smart and obsessed with Crime Scene Investigation and setting up fake crime scenes for his mother to solve. Jacobs passion for criminology gets him in a lot of trouble that he may regret. Even though he meant perfectly well. The whole situation winds him up in court, and due to his Aspergers it is hard for him to cope with a disrupted schedule. How can a jury believe he is innocent if he has no emotion when he talks about the case or has a meltdown ever 10 minutes. How will the judge rule him innocent and not put him in jail if he won't look anyone in the eyes and appears guilty. Reading this book, you will learn how it feels to live with a child who is very predictable and also at the same time unpredictable. You will learn a lot about Aspergers and how it not only effects the person with it, how it also effects everyone around. This book is one of my favorites by Jodi Picoult and honestly, I was pretty upset when I finished it.
